Internal: Perpetual Motion

Applying systems thinking to internal processes to create a more open organization can also shake things up, but mostly in the form of transforming linear or disjointed processes into circular, flowing, and dynamic ones. It requires reexamining your internal processes to make sure they account for the dynamic complexity of your organization, not just the detail complexity.

One of the most obvious places to make this shift is in your organization’s strategic planning process. In Chapter 3, we pulled back the curtain to expose some of the fundamental flaws behind strategic planning, demonstrating its developmental roots in the machine-based view of organizations. Its formalized processes force us to predict the future and somehow suspend time while we do our strategic thinking. After we have the plan in place, we then start the clock again and implement the plan for the next five years. We don’t think this process ever was effective, let alone in today’s more social world, and proponents of systems thinking would agree.
